Based in Parkland, Florida, William Burns today serves as executive vice president and chief financial officer at Cross Country Healthcare. To augment his work, he belongs to Florida’s Institute of Chief Financial Officers. That professional organization supports the charitable work of Step Up for Students, which includes scholarship programs such as the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program.
Created in 2001, the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program is designed to allow all families access to private education or public schools outside of a student’s local area. Scholarships go to students attending kindergarten through 12th grade whose family meets income criteria.
The state’s low-income students have received more than 991,000 scholarships since the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program began. On average, scholarship students receive $6,673 to $7,169 in funds to attend local private schools. Statewide, nearly 1,900 private schools welcomed scholarship students throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. According to a study by the Urban Institute, scholarship recipients are 45 percent more likely to earn a college degree.
